A Guide to Getting Healthy Glowing Skin for Men

This Summer You Deserve to Have Healthy, Glowing Skin – Here’s How to Get It

Traditionally the idea of a healthy man, meant you had to be tanned, toned, and brimming testosterone, although we all know that’s not reality. Even the men showcased in popular
fitness magazines or those training hard, during their beast mode workouts, which you later see while scrolling on Instagram or TikTok, aren’t made perfect.

So just to make it absolutely clear, when we say healthy skin we don’t mean attaining flawless skin, but instead, we define health as proactively protecting your skin’s surface on the outside and nourish your body correctly on the inside, because your skin reflects both, and together can make you glow from the inside out.

Now we’ve got all that cleared up, let's address something else. You might have thought your skin has been protected over the past year or so because you have been inside not exposing yourself to pollution, adverse weather conditions, and the potential risk of sunburn; and yes that is true.

However, we hate to break it to you, but it seems you’ve now been handed a new set of skin issues to overcome thanks to heaters, AC, the lack of fresh air, sun deprivation, and the four-letter "M" word that has been wreaking havoc with your face. Which can all be key factors, into why your skin has been looking and feeling dry, dull, and in some cases older than it should (not in a George Clooney kind of way but in a pruney, wrinkly kind of way).

So as we move into the post-pandemic era, you’ll need to make sure you have all your bases covered beforehand because according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) some of the most common summer skin conditions include acne, dry and irritated skin, prickly heat and you guessed it, sunburn. All of these are preventable and could be stopping you from achieving the healthy glowing skin you deserve.

Keep Cool, Calm, and Collected

Lockdown skin is real and cosmetic dermatologist at the Pierre Skin Care Institute, Dr. Peterson Pierre explains why: “Having to wear masks has definitely increased acne, and the stress and anxiety [of that] has led to more eczema.” That, he shares, is because stress triggers a release of the primary stress hormone, cortisol, which increases inflammation all over the body, including the skin.

Why is Inflammation bad? Well if you have eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea, inflammation can aggravate them, and Pierre adds, “continuous high levels of cortisol lead to the breakdown of some of your body's tissues including collagen and elastin which then leads to increased fine lines and wrinkles as well as decreased healing.”

Not to mention, long-term stress can affect the skin's immune system making you more susceptible to infections, heart conditions, and can impact your sleep. However, there is one easy solution to reducing your stress levels and it’s easier than you may think. A recent study by The Harvard Medical School found that being outside for 10 minutes or more, can help reduce stress and activate the nervous system that helps you relax but if you don’t have access to outside space, other research has shown that looking at pictures of nature also has a similar effect.

Shave, Exfoliate, and Moisturize Your Face

If you are prone to having sensitive skin, experience razor burns, bumps, or ingrown hairs, specialists recommend exfoliating first, followed by using a moisturizing shaving cream to soften the skin and hair, to reduce to risk of irritation. However, if you insist on a dry shave, allow your skin to rest after washing it, as the face tends to swell after cleansing. Oh and your post-shave game is just as important, so make sure to take care of your skin by using a cold towel or cold water in the area to close your pores.

While we are on the topic of your face, Pierre says ”simplicity is key when it comes to men's skincare because most of us simply won't put on 5-10 products daily, regardless of the benefit.” So he has cleverly condensed his must-haves into three essentials, which he says take seconds to apply, can easily fit into any schedule, and will be worth the investment.

One, “is an alpha-hydroxy serum in the morning for gentle exfoliation and collagen production for brighter, clearer skin.”

Two, “is a good oil-free, non-comedogenic, zinc-based sunscreen that's light and transparent because we hate the greasy, heavy feeling of sunscreen. I would also add antioxidants to help fight free radicals and DNA repair enzymes to repair a lot of the damaged DNA that happens over time. Fortunately, there are a few products on the market that combine all three ingredients so you can get the most bang for your buck and your time

Three, “is a retinoid at night for its ability to help excess oil, blackheads, whiteheads, acne, pores, texture while also stimulating collagen production for fine line reduction

So when you’re looking for a new skincare product, should you just go for any that suits your skin type or even better one that says eco-friendly? Well here’s the tricky part, it’s not that simple because the global grooming market has increased so much that research now shows it's projected to be worth $75.8 billion by 2027, meaning more companies will be vying for you to buy their product by using popular buzzwords and ingredients. Bond Official founder, Igee Okafor advises “product-wise, it's important to figure out your skin concerns specific to you, before hopping on a bandwagon of what works for someone else.”

When looking at brands especially if you have any skin concerns, it’s always safe to go for hydrating and moisturizing products that will help bring your skin back to life such as Bio-Oil or Aveeno.

Okafor’s personal favorites include the Dr. Barbara Strum cleanser, Biologique Recherche P50 1970 Classic Formula Exfoliator, and the La Mer's Moisturizing Soft Cream.

Keep Sun Exposure to a Minimum

Wearing SPF is fundamental to protecting your skin from the sun, and should always be worn by everyone, no matter what shade you are because the AAD states that skin cancer can affect anyone, regardless of their skin color, and actually, people who are born with more melanin are often diagnosed at a later stage when it’s more difficult to treat. So it’s so vital to include this into your everyday routine because it really can save your life.

Pro tip: it’s recommended you wear a generous amount of sunscreen that is SPF 30 or above with a high UVA rating and to apply often.

“There is no such thing as a safe tan because increasing its melanin content is the only defense mechanism your skin has, against the ultraviolet radiation it's experiencing," Pierre says about the idea of tanning safely. "The only safe method is artificially in the forms of various creams that can give you color but keep in mind, sunblock is still necessary.”

Also if you can, gradually start introducing the sun to your skin going forward because this will help build your skin’s resistance, reducing your chance of having heat rash and prickly heat.

Wear Natural, Breathable Fibers

The fabrics you drape on your body, especially in the warmer months can have a huge impact on your skin, so it’s imperative to allow your skin and pores to breathe in light fabrics such as 100% cotton, linen, and silk, to avoid bacteria build-up and to decrease your rate of getting prickly heat, which is caused by overheating.

The Harvard Medical School also states that if you block your sweat ducts, they could become inflamed, creating a rash of small itchy bumps whenever material touches you, and no one wants that. The same rule applies for towels, so why not opt for an anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic towel, the next time you’re in need of a new one and pro tip, pat or blot dry your skin after a workout or a shower, to stop drying out your skin.

Keep Your Body Moisturized

Exercise is a great way to improve your mood, strengthen your muscles, and help you naturally detoxify the body by sweating, which works wonders for your skin. Yet because you’re losing so much fluid, it’s imperative that you stay hydrated, to avoid getting dehydrated. Also, it’s recommended to shower as soon as you can post-workout; and if you want to maintain your skin’s natural protective oils using warm or cold water can help brighten your skin and regulate your body temperature.

"For one to have good skin, blood has to be able to flow and circulate in all areas of the body and cold showers help make sure of that, especially if you have dry skin like me," Okafor says. "I try to sustain it for about three to four minutes after a warm [or] hot shower.”

Maintain a Balanced Diet

There’s truly are no disadvantages to having a balanced diet rich in a variety of fresh produce and plenty of water because hydration, vitamins (especially C, D, E, and K), and nutrients are key for maintaining plump and fresh-looking skin. Nonetheless, at times, you may naturally lack what your body needs and that’s where vitamin brands such as Care/of can step in and help with this very common deficiency.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep is an integral part of maintaining a healthy body. For those six to eight hours, your body can regenerate, replenish, and revitalize damaged or old skin cells and produce new ones. Also, investing in high-quality mattresses and bed sheets, and maintaining the ideal sleep temperature — between 60–67 degrees Fahrenheit — keeps the body’s internal temperature lower, ultimately making a difference to your skin.

If you want to take it one step further, dermatologists recommend moisturizing your body (not just your elbows and hands) before bed, to help rehydrate the skin while you are in a slumber.

The way a healthy glow shows up on the skin looks different, depending on the person because we all have blemishes, stretch marks, cellulite, and acne — and that’s okay. In fact, you would be an anomaly if you looked as perfect as you do in those FaceTuned photos. So if you want to live for a long time and look good while doing it, then you need to take care of your skin, because it's the only skin you've got, and your future self will thank you for it
