NYC Department of Health Issues Safe-Sex Guidelines During COVID-19

The Department of Health Wants to Save You (and Your Sex Life

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, competing in Germany’s version of “Big Brother” or on a spiritual retreat in the desert, you’ve probably been in full quarantine mode for weeks. That means being holed up in your
home without seeing your friends and family, much less going on dates. Needless to say, it’s not just tough times ahead for the economy, but for our sex lives as well.

If you’ve been wondering whether or not it’s safe to have sex right now, well, you’re not alone. Thankfully, the New York City Department of Health has just released guidelines designed to calm and instruct the public, helping them “enjoy sex” while still preventing the spread of the virus.

How to Practice Safe Sex During the COVID-19 Quarantine
First, and most importantly, is it ok to keep having sex during the quarantine? The Department of Health says, “Yes, it’s ok to have sex,” but within the larger social distancing framework.

Basically, that means if you’re already living with your partner, enjoy yourselves. On the other hand, if you’re one of the many single people living alone, you’re in a more difficult situation. The Department of Health was unequivocal here: “You should avoid close contact, including sex, with anyone outside your household.”

As of right now, there’s no evidence that the coronavirus is sexually transmitted, but everything else that happens before, during and after sex – touching, breathing and the exchange of saliva – are most definitely risky transmission vectors for the disease.

That means that your days of Tinder meet-ups or late-night bar trawls are suspended, at least for the time being. Obviously, you can still keep in digital contact with your prospective partners, but expect frustration levels to mount with all that flirting you’re doing resulting in no physical payoff for the time being.

Thankfully, there are countless virtual alternatives to physical sex. Sure, Pornhub has stepped up to the crisis big time by offering all of Italy free membership to their premium content, but porn doesn’t offer the same socializing benefits of sex with a partner.

As for your other options, the Department of Health specifically approved these virtual activities, suggesting “video dates, sexting or chat rooms” as viable options to keep the fun levels high and the transmission levels low.

If you’re new to the digital world of sex, we’ve got you covered: Here’s some bonus info on the best places to find adult chat rooms and tips and techniques to have cybersex like a veteran.

All of these digital options limit your physical contact to, well, you, but in the midst of a global pandemic, that might not be the worst option. “You are your safest sex partner,” says the Department of Health guidelines, and they’re not wrong. Even when you’re only touching yourself, they still stress the importance of washing your hands “with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after sex.”

This is unwelcome news for many people, but guess what? Isolating yourself as much as possible while restricting your sexual fun to the digital sphere is the safest thing you can do for you and your community in this crisis.
