Men love their statistics. No matter what your sport, chances are you follow the stats of your favorite players. AskMen has some numbers for you that could serve an even more important purpose than helping you out in your fantasy football league.

Recently, a national sex study was done by researchers at Indiana University’s Center for Sexual Health Promotion. Much like AskMen’s Great Male Survey, it revealed some fascinating facts about the sex lives of average Americans. The  most comprehensive sex survey of our time was carried out using interviews with 5,865 Americans aged 14 to 94 regarding what they’re up to behind closed doors. Naturally, there are plenty of exceptions to every average statistic, but the survey results give us a peak at what’s going on in America’s bedrooms. Some of the statistics in the report will be of particular interest to the AskMen reader. Here’s a breakdown of where you’re hitting, where you’re missing and some advice about how to improve your game.

Masturbating

According to the data, with the exception of the 71+ age group, at least 60% of men have masturbated within the past year, and an impressive 84% of men between 25 and 29 are taking matters into their own hands. In contrast, women are masturbating in much smaller numbers, consistently 10% to 30% lower than men in the same age group. This is bad news for you because a woman who is well acquainted with her own body will be more confident sexually, making her willing and able to blow your mind in the bedroom. So, you should never discourage her from pleasuring herself.

The survey also revealed that masturbating in the presence of a partner is a less popular activity than going solo with only 49% of men aged 25 to 29 engaging in it. Encouraging your girl to touch herself while you watch is the best way to learn what does it for her, and letting her watch you will have the same effect for her.

Oral sex

The numbers on how many men have received oral sex from a woman and given oral sex to a woman in the past year show a perturbing discrepancy. It seems that men in nearly every age category are more likely to receive oral sex from their female partners than to give it. Only the 18- to 24-year-olds are tipping the oral scales in the other direction, offering more mouth action than their female counterparts. It goes without saying that a woman getting enough oral sex is a happier woman, and all the more willing to reciprocate.

Intercourse

Good, old-fashioned vaginal intercourse is quite common among men aged 18 to 69 with at least 53% (18 to 19 years of age) and up to 86% (25 to 29 years of age) of respondents saying they’ve had vaginal intercourse in the past year. This kind of sex can be amazing, but don’t forget that there are many other things you should have in your sexual repertoire. It is an ever-reliable standard, of course, but try getting your numbers up in the manual, oral and anal categories too. After all, the study showed that women are more likely to orgasm when a variety of sexual acts are involved.

Anal sex

Those lusty 25- to 29-year-olds top the percentages again when it comes to having anal sex. About 27% of them have been in someone’s bum in the past year. But this is still a fairly minimal number and the stats only get lower in the directions of both the young and the old. Your girlfriend not wanting to try it is really no excuse, since the study revealed that just as many, if not more, women are on the receiving end of anal sex than men are on the giving end. Maybe you think she’d never go for it, but you’ll never know until you ask.

Condoms

The young ones are the winners in this category with condom usage the highest among 14- to 17-year-olds. The frequency of wearing a condom steadily declines as men age, dropping to 29% among 25- to 34-year-olds and bottoming out at 5% for senior citizens. Of course, as men age, more of them enter monogamous relationships, have vasectomies or have partners with permanent birth control solutions, making condoms less important. But the low numbers when it comes to protection are somewhat disturbing considering the likelihood of getting a sexually transmitted infection without condoms. This is one area of your sex life where you definitely want to be above average.
